During my years in the banking Sector between 1974 and 1991, I was responsible for the maintenance and implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)Act in order to ensure the safety and legal compliance of the branch and its employees.  This involved checking the Government Gazette weekly for any updates and changes which would be brought to the attention of the Branch Manager and Accountants. I was also responsible for establishing the OHS Team and Fire Marshalls and had to ensure they were trained accordingly. The biannual evacuation drills and compliance reporting was also my responsibility.

I was further responsible for establishing the Occupational Health Act, Act 85 of 1993, team and the appointment of fire officers, as well as ensuring that they were adequately and appropriately trained. The coordination of 6 monthly evacuation drills and the preparation of compliance reports also fell under my portfolio.

Since legal compliance is a core requirement and it is essential to keep the necessary documentation on record, for when the Department of Employment and Labour conducts a company audit, I realised that this was a vital and growing sector in which I could not only build a future for myself, but also create career opportunities for others.

I subsequently took the initiative to secure approval from the Department of Education and Labour (DEL) to compile all the Goverment Gazzetts into a single, user-friendly handbook, allowing companies easier access to clear and consolidated information.

In July 1992, we registered Bayteck Fire cc as a family business and we commenced business on the 1st May 1996.

Why a”k” and not an “h”?

Looking back in history at the greatest boxing legend Muhammad Ali, his famous phrase “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. That is why there is a “k” instead of an “h”, the name sticks in our clients heads!

Our inital strategy was to open a branch, monthly, establishing branches Nationally, because we believed that there should be a branch on the doorstep of every client, and we opened our first branch in Midrand on the 1st May 1996. The others followed as planned.
